Osteopathy for postnatal pain

Did you notice that when you were pregnant, everyone asked how you were feeling? Then once you’d given birth, did anyone ask the same question? Maybe one or two people did for a few weeks but the real focus then is on how the baby is doing. But actually the post-natal period can be really challenging physically for a woman, and when I say post-natal period I mean at least a year after giving birth, often more. As well as recovering from a huge event that is childbirth, your body has to adapt rapidly to its pre-pregnancy state, and all the while deal with the new demands that come with having a baby – constant lifting, bending, breastfeeding, pushing a pram, lack of sleep, worry…I could go on! Even as an osteopath with knowledge of the body, I hardly thought about my own recovery in those early days after birth. And these things don’t go away quickly, your baby becomes a toddler who is a lot heavier! So it is understandable that for some, the body doesn’t fully recover and problems can develop.

The body, particularly the pelvis, is vulnerable to lasting strains developed from pregnancy and childbirth which can contribute to a range of ongoing issues such as back pain, pelvic pain, pelvic floor issues and more. These often don't manifest until months or even a year later and it can be quite alarming if pain comes on suddenly.

How can osteopathy help?

Osteopathy can assist the body’s recovery by restoring mobility and correcting imbalances of the joints and soft tissue throughout the body. It has a beneficial effect on the nervous system, helping you to relax and feel calmer. Treatment can also help with all those physical demands of motherhood that lead to general aches and pains such as backache, neck pain and even headaches. Where needed, gentle Pilates exercises will be included to begin activating and strengthening your deep abdominals. We will look at any changes you can make at home to reduce repeated stress on your body.

You do not need to be in pain to see an osteopath. A post-natal check-up will include a full assessment and treatment to aid your recovery and to prevent any future problems. It can be a real treat to take an hour out of your busy life as a mum to focus on yourself. However if childcare is a problem, you are welcome to bring your baby along.
